About Us

Welcome to Understanding Dogs. We are based in central Somerset in South West England, a beautiful county of open meadows, rolling hills, stunning moorland and one of the finest wetland habitats in the world.

My name is Jan Windsor. I share my life in this beautiful landscape with my family and my 3 dogs.

I have been involved with training dogs from a child - being raised on a farm I grew up with the sheep and cattle dogs and learned a great deal from the shepherds about the way these dogs were trained. It was inevitable I suppose that my breed of choice would be the Border Collie, but over the years I have owned and trained many other breeds.

I am an Affiliate Member of the COAPE Association of Companion Animal Behavour and Training (DipCAPBT) I hold a Distinction in the COAPE Advanced Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour and Training. . CAPBT is the largest specifically qualified association for pet behaviourists and trainers in the UK. Membership of the CAPBT is solely by qualification, members having to pass the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology’s (COAPE) independently NOCN accredited Diploma in Practical Animal Behaviour and Training. I am also a Certified Animal Behavourist and Trainer with the International Companion Animal Network (ICAN), an organisation guaranteeing that listed Behaviourists and Trainers use force free methods.

Now I spend my free time competing in Agility with my own dogs and coaching others to do the same.

My four gorgeous dogs - Moss, Bob-Bob, Meggie and Toby - who were with me at the start of this enterprise

Sadly we lost our beloved Meggie in the week before Christmas 2013 and then Moss left us in 2017. Both are now  causing chaos I am sure, over the Rainbow Bridge. We miss them very much. But it meant we had space for a new dog in the family, so in June 2017, little rescue girl Layla came to stay. She is very young, but good fun...
